18th August – Drive/Ride West Penwith
Usual format with a 10am start from the Lelant Saltings car park. What a shame more members don’t come on this periodical West Penwith ride – it really is a treat!
Anyway, six takers set off to Marazion via the back road that goes past St Erth station. An obligatory coffee stop was observed on the sea-front at Longrock on this beautiful morning. Niq took the opportunity to go for a quick ‘dip’ in Mounts Bay – apparently it was delightful – I’ll take his word for it…………..
Onwards to Penzance on the cycle track and right at Newlyn to climb onto Penwith Moor and eventually to descend to Trewellard on the North Coast. Pasty time for me at the Geevor Mine café (good to catch up with Bob Jewell for a chat) and though Paul and Roz had their order mysteriously ‘forgotten’ we eventually were all refuelled and wandered back along the coast road (it’s just magnificent!) with a helpful tail wind, though truth be told it got somewhat warm along the exposed bits around Zennor. How often have we been able to say that so consistently in any summer recently?
A return via Halsetown and the long ‘drop’ into Lelant was, like the rest of the trip, a veritable pleasure, a freewheel most of the way.
A few more next time round, please…………………….
