Easy ride to Hell’s Mouth 1st November

Sunday 1st November, “easy” to Hells Mouth  (sort of!)
As usual there was some hiatus at the start of the ride, this was due to the fact that, whilst it was known that the Hell’s Mouth Cafe was due to shut for the season on this day, it was belatedly remembered that last time the club had visited Hell’s Mouth on their closing day, a proportion of the usual menu items had been unavailable, and that the service had been distinctly off hand, with the staff giving the impression that serving customers was just an interruption to their real task of shutting up shop for the winter…
Consequently it was decided that time and fatigue allowing, the party should continue on to Godrevy instead, this decision was informed both by the announcement that Paul had in fact arranged to meet his noticeably absent other half, at just that destination, at around lunch time, and that the cafe at Godrevy had recently instituted it’s new “Hearty Sunday Soup” regime.
At any rate an only mildly confused party of 8 set off for Godrevy in good spirits with dry but murky weather and a slight tail wind.  In order to facilitate the avoidance of too many hills, it was decided to take the most straight forward and direct, but possibly more “main road-y” route to the destination.
Consequently we variously spun/ground/struggled up station hill, carefully avoiding being run over at the Sainsbury roundabout, before, due to the previously mentioned tail wind, swooping easily up Higher Town, branching off to the left, with a cheerful wave to Geek Central AKA Maplins, through Threemilestone, up and down via Greenbottom, with a sharp right at the possibly aptly nicknamed “Dangerous Crossing”.
Followed by a quick squiggle along Penstraze, across the A30 bridge, straight across the Blackwater road, right turn towards Mount Hawke (as previously noted, some club members are of the opinion that all roads lead there) and another right with a long down hill through Skinner’s Bottom.
Right onto the Porthtowan road, for a few hundred yards, before a sharp right in the direction of Mawla Church, watch out for the gravelly bits at the bottom and the cars of the churchgoers.
Thence to a small but steep rise, if you get the prior downhill speed correct, no pedalling required, to make the very sharp right more or less half way up the hill, and connect with the Point to Portreath cycle route, mind the fluorescent cycling enthusiasts filling the trail in the opposite direction, and the cars hiding in the downhill bend to the left,  as you cross the side road before, after a another few hundred yards, rejoining the main road, for a tail wind powered blast downhill at some speed past Cambrose and the well known Elm Farm Bike hire and cafe…
Carefully turning right across joining the main road at the bottom heading towards Portreath, mostly flat with just a hint of that tail wind.
At this point it was decided to turn left at Bridge, rather than struggling up the infamous Portreath Wall…
Struggling instead up the Bridge Hill, possibly easier, but who can be sure, with a turn right near the top, heading down Church Town Road, right again, past Illogan School (or academy or whatever they call that new building these days)
Squiggle up and down a few minor hills, and some interesting bends, watch out for those slippery leaves, before a right turn into Alexander Road at Mary’s Well
(commemorating M. Bassett, June 21st, 1888 or there abouts, water available for thirsty dogs and cyclists, but not these days it seems, horses, as their trough is now a planter)
Another right turn after a few hundred yards rejoining the higher Porteath road.
A brief pause at the left turn onto the road via the North Cliffs to Godrevy, to check that everybody knew where they were going, and how to get there, before the ride leader sped off for the final destination, buoyed up by a brisk tail wind,
the last 5 miles being completed in 17 minutes (not that anybody was timing this of course!)
(total route from Truro, 18.5 miles, average speed, well at least of the group leader’s, 13mph)

The ride leader consequently arrived at Godrevy in plenty of time for the “Hearty Soup”, well too plentiful in fact, although unusually for such a gloriously warm day, there was barely a customer to be seen, the staff had not in fact decanted the soups into the assigned pots, as it was but a quarter to noon…
The rest of the riders arrived shortly thereafter, but as had unfortunately the usual assortment of visitors, no doubt attracted by the enticing smell of “Hearty Moroccan Lamb Stew”, and by this time there was now a queue out the door and round the building…
John and Debbie had peeled off, as agreed, from the group at this stage, so a reduced band of cyclists, sat upstairs outside on the balcony, in the relatively warm sunshine that had suddenly materialised, overlooking a view of some magical  surf in the distance.
John Gilbert, whilst deploring the fact that he had been dragged forcibly past, would he felt would have been a very satisfying breakfast, at Hell’s Mouth, did admit that this was a pleasant change, as he recalled that he had not in fact visited Godrevy, since what must have been some several years ago, as he had at the time been in the company of a certain Bob Mansbridge.
After a very enjoyable lunch, (it was noted that the doorstops accompanying the soup were comparable to the Bolingey Inn’s) and the brief appearance of Ros, who had not been riding due to an elbow injury sustained in the surf, whilst off in the antipodes, but had arrived to collect Paul, the group departed back along the North Cliffs…
Unfortunately into the teeth of, what now turned out to be a very stiff, opposing wind…
Having ascertained that they all knew where they were going, the ride leader callously abandoned the group to their fate…
Well actually as was his wont he stopped for a very enjoyable swim at Portreath, in some sunny, beautiful but worryingly boisterous surf…
